Which standards govern gear couplings and why they differ by region
Almost every dispute about a gear coupling ends up being a dispute about which document governs it — and, just as often, about whether a cited document governs the coupling at all or just one component of it. A catalogue coupling built to AGMA 9002 and one supplied against IS 3238 differ in bore tolerance, tolerance system and documentation expectation, while a DIN standard cited on the same drawing may govern nothing more than the seal.
This cluster maps the documents an engineer is most likely to encounter: AGMA 9002 for general industrial bores and fits, IS 3238 for domestic Indian supply, ISO 14691 for general-purpose petroleum service, and DIN 3761 / DIN 5480 for the seal and spline component standards referenced alongside whichever of the above actually governs the coupling.
